Biography
He graduated from the Art Academy in Dresden , came to Russia and entered the service of one of the most famous and prestigious photo studios of the Russian Empire - “Scherer, Nabgolts and Co.” In Moscow since 1865, he lived at the corner of Maroseyka and Kozmodemyanovsky lane, Leonovs house, apt. 11. Opened in the house of Prince Gagarin, a photographic institution on the Kuznetsk bridge, where he was engaged, in addition to photography, and phototype .
In 1887, Thiele, already a venerable photographer, informs of a new instant way to shoot portraits:
“The court photographer-artist R. Thiele, Moscow, Kuznetsk bridge, No. 13, takes orders for snapshots in the evening under the light of magnesium! I especially recommend pictures of children near the Christmas tree, family, theater, costume groups and live pictures for the upcoming holidays. Samples on display . ”
Around the same time, Thiele conducted the first experiments on the shooting of theater performances in the light of magnesium. He took several successful shots of scenes from the extravaganza “ Magic Pills ” and the opera “ Othello ” at the Bolshoi Theater ; then these photos were shown at one of the St. Petersburg exhibitions.
The Moscow press wrote in those years:
“ However, the method used by Mr. Thiele posed an extreme danger to the theater in relation to fire, and the exposed photographs were so strongly retouched by them that it was impossible to determine what the photograph gave and what was corrected by the artist .”
Since 1890, photographers have loved and practiced theatrical scenes in their own institutions, where actors were invited. Scenes and even whole performances of Moscow theaters were shot there, but as such there were no photo studios in Moscow at the theaters. Another picture was observed in St. Petersburg : in 1890, in the right wing of the Mariinsky Theater, a photo studio of the Imperial theaters opened, which immediately occupied three floors.
In 1889, at the photo exhibition in St. Petersburg, Thiel was awarded the medal of the Imperial Russian Technical Society " ... for excellent work in various fields of photography and its applications ... " The Photographic Bulletin magazine noted:
“ Interesting photographs related to physiology (the development of the embryo, various hypnotized states, etc.) were delivered by Thiele, regarding whom it should be noted that in terms of diversity and at the same time superiority of his work, he is a rarity between professional photographers .”
After 1896, the photographer was invited to the Ministry of Railways in St. Petersburg to head the phototopographic work. The Ministry sent him abroad to study the phototopographic method. After a business trip, Thiele headed the phototopographic part of the expedition " to find railways in Transbaikalia, Transcaucasia and Persia ."
Since 1898, Tile R. Yu. - Member of the Russian Photographic Society (RFO). The RFO, at the meetings of which N.E. Zhukovsky, K.A. Timiryazev and other prominent scientists spoke, was located in the building of the Passage of K. S. Popov (Dzhamgarovs) ( Kuznetsky Most Street , Building No. 12)
Here is how Konstantin Vladimirovich Chibisov characterizes R. Yu. Tile (1897-1988; member of the RFO since 1918) in his essays on history:
“ ... a pioneer of aerial phototopography and engineering photogrammetry in Russia, in 1898, in search of increasing camera productivity, he created a panoramic photographer - an integrated camera with seven lenses, one of which is central and planned, and the other six are promising. With the help of side chambers located at an angle of 30 °, perspective photographs of the visible horizon were obtained, which were processed in another device, also the design of Thiele, a perspective meter; as a result, an orthogonal terrain plan was obtained. It should be noted that the described devices appeared earlier than similar ones in France and Austria . ”
At the end of 1897, a photograph of R. Yu. Thiele was bought by D. I. Peschansky, giving her a new name: “ Artistic, ex. Thiele . "
Almost until his death, Thiele lectured on photography.
December 16, 1911 R. Yu. Thile died in Moscow, having lived 68 years; buried at Vvedensky cemetery .
