Biography

Born in Moscow . From a working-class family. He graduated from 3 classes of the elementary city school in 1905, 4-class commercial school in 1909.

Drafted into the Russian imperial army in January 1915. Sent gunner in the Grodno fortress artillery , from March 1915 in the Novogeorgievskaya fortress artillery . From August 1915 he studied at the 3rd Moscow School of Ensigns, after graduating from it on November 14 (27), 1915 he was promoted to ensign and sent to serve in the 199th Infantry Reserve Battalion in Ivanovo-Voznesensk . Since December 1915 - a junior officer of the 4th Hundred of the 4th Neman Frontier Infantry Regiment. In April 1916 he was promoted to second lieutenant . Since May 1916, the junior officer of the foot reconnaissance team, in December he was appointed commander of the 9th hundred. Since January 1917 - company commander of the 708th Russian Infantry Regiment, March 12 (25) was promoted to lieutenant . Since October 1917 - commander of the 1st company of the 80th Kabardino Infantry Regiment , in January 1918 he was appointed commander of the 1st battalion. Demobilized in February 1918. The last rank in the old army is the lieutenant.

In the Red Army since September 1918. Since November 1918, he commanded a company of Ivanovo-Voznesensky reserve battalion. Since June 1919 he participated in the Civil War on the Western Front : the company commander of the 158th Infantry Regiment, from June the battalion commander, from October 1919 - the assistant commander of the 15th Infantry Regiment, and from November 1919 - the commander of the 15th Infantry Regiment. Since March 1920, he commanded the 4th Infantry Brigade of the 2nd Infantry Division . In 1919 he participated in battles against the troops of General N.N. Yudenich near Petrograd and Pskov . In 1921, for distinctions in the Soviet-Polish war - for breaking through the fortifications of the Brest-Litovsk fortress and for fighting near Warsaw - he was awarded two Orders of the Red Banner .

In 1922 he graduated from the Higher Academic Courses at the MV Frunze Military Academy . In the interwar period from October 1922, M. N. Gerasimov served on the Western Front , then in the Belorussian Military District : assistant commander of the 5th Infantry Division , and since October 1923 - commander of the 33rd Infantry Division . In 1928, he graduated from the Advanced Training Courses for the Higher Command at the MV Frunze Military Academy. Since January 1930 - assistant inspector, then deputy inspector of the Physical Training Inspectorate of the Red Army. From January 1934 - Deputy Inspector of Infantry of the Red Army, from November 1935 - Deputy Chief of the 2nd Division of the General Staff of the Red Army . Since April 1936 - Assistant to the Head of the Combat Training Directorate of the Red Army. Since July 9, 1940 - commander of the 19th Rifle Corps in the Leningrad Military District .

At the beginning of World War II M.N. Gerasimov in the same position. Since the beginning of July 1941, the corps of the 23rd Army of the Northern Front defended the state border of the USSR from the village of Enso to the area west of the city of Sortavala . Since August 6, 1941 - the commander of the 23rd army. Under the command of M.N. Gerasimov, army troops in a difficult situation repelled the Finnish offensive on Leningrad from the north and, under the blows of the enemy’s forces, retreated to the line of the old state border where they occupied the previously equipped Karelian fortified area. September 8, 1941 sent to the command of the troops of the Leningrad Front K.E. Voroshilov . In June-September 1942, he was the head of the control group for the formation of march replenishment in the military districts. In the future, M. N. Gerasimov - deputy commander of the Kalinin Front , at the disposal of the Main Personnel Directorate, deputy commander of the 2nd Baltic Front . During this period, M. N. Gerasimov participated in the Leningrad-Novgorod , Starorussko-Novorzhevskaya , Rezhitsky-Dvinsk , and Baltic offensive operations. From August 16 to October 5, 1944, he was the commander of the troops of the 3rd Shock Army of the 2nd Baltic Front. Under the command of M.N. Gerasimov, the army takes part in the Madona and Riga offensive operations. Since October 1944 - Deputy Commander of the 2nd Baltic Front .

In November 1944, recalled to the rear and appointed chief inspector of infantry of the Red Army . From June 1946 - Deputy Inspector General of the Inspectorate of Rifle Forces of the Main Inspection of the Armed Forces of the USSR, from June 1948 - Inspector General of the same.

In August 1950, he was appointed assistant commander of the troops of the Tauride Military District , but did not take office due to a serious illness. Since February 1951 he was at the disposal of the Main Directorate of Personnel of the Soviet Army, being under treatment. Since July 1953, retired.

He lived in Moscow. The author of the memoirs Awakening (published in 1965).

He died in Moscow on June 3, 1962. He was buried at the Don cemetery.
