Andrei Sergeevich Smirnov (born March 12, 1941 , Moscow , USSR ) is a Soviet and Russian film and theater actor , film director , screenwriter and playwright. Member of the regional public organization of Russian filmmakers KinoSoyuz . People's Artist of the Russian Federation ( 2003 ).

Biography
Andrei Smirnov was born on March 12, 1941 in Moscow. The son of the writer Sergei Sergeyevich Smirnov . Mother - Virginia (Vergine) Genrikhovna Smirnova, Jewish father and Armenian mother [3] .
In 1962 he graduated from the directing department of VGIK (workshop of Mikhail Romm ).
In 1971 he shot the film “ Belorussky Train Station ”, which was awarded the Main Prize at the I Festival of Contemporary Cinematography in Karlovy Vary in 1971. For more than forty years, Belorussky Train Station has remained one of the best films on the theme of the Great Patriotic War, and the song “ We Need One Victory ” (“Birds Don't Sing Here, Trees Don't Grow ...”) by Bulat Okudzhava - a popular patriotic song without which there is not a single celebration of Victory Day .
From 1988 to 1990, he was the first secretary of the board of the Union of Filmmakers of the USSR
For the role of writer Ivan Bunin in the film "The Diary of His Wife, " he was awarded several film awards:
- Jury Prize named after V. Frid - VI International Human Rights Film Festival " Stalker " (2000) [4]
- Prize "for the best male role" - Minsk International Film Festival " Listapad " (2000)
- Prize "for the best male role" - National Prize of the Russian Academy of Motion Picture Arts " Nika " (2000)
- Prize "for the best male role" - 7th Gatchina Film Festival " Literature and Cinema " (2001).
In 2005, he was elected chairman of the jury of the XV IFF “Message to Man . ”
Returning to filmmaking after a thirty-year hiatus, A. Smirnov made the film “ Once Upon a Woman ” in his script. The painting was shown at the closing of the 19th Vyborg Film Festival “Window to Europe”, held in August 2011, and was awarded the “Prize of the President of the Festival”. [5] The film was also featured in the competition program of the 35th Montreal World Film Festival in August 2011. [6] The director Irina Bessarabova created the documentary “To the Drunken Peasants' Talk” (the title is a line from M. Yu. Lermontov ’s poem “Homeland”, 1841), which tells about the fate of A. Smirnov and the shooting of the film “Once Upon a Time There Was One Woman” .
In June 2011, at the opening ceremony of the XXII Kinotavr Open Russian Film Festival , A. Smirnov was awarded the Prize “For Honor and Dignity”.
At the 25th anniversary ceremony of the Nika National Film Award (for 2011), A. Smirnov was awarded the prize for the film “Once Upon a Time There Was a Woman” in the nomination “Best Screenplay”, and his film was recognized as “Best Feature Film” [7] .
In 2013, together with his son Alexei, he took part in the documentary series “Dynasty” (dir. A. Pishchulin), acting as a narrator.
In December 2000, he was among cultural figures who condemned the return to the Soviet anthem to the music of Alexandrov [8] . In March 2014, he signed a letter from the Russian "Union of Cinematographers and Professional Cinematographic Organizations and Associations" in support of Ukraine against the extensive "anti-Ukrainian campaign" in Russia and the "intervention" of Russian troops in Ukraine [9] . He believes that “until we finally settle accounts with the Soviet past, it will return” [10] .

Father - writer Sergey Sergeevich Smirnov. Mother - pianist Virginia Genrikhovna Smirnova (1911-1992). Brother - TV journalist Konstantin Sergeyevich Smirnov. Grandmother (by mother) - Alla Stepanovna Ter-Epifanyan. Great-grandfather - Stepan Ter-Epifanyan - a wealthy Armenian merchant from Yekaterinodar (now Krasnodar). Married to actress Elena Smirnova (Prudnikova) , known for the films “ Two Captains ”, “ Variant Omega ”.
He has three daughters and a son: Avdotya and Alexandra (from a marriage with Natalia Rudna ), Aglaya and Alexei (from a marriage with Elena Smirnova). Son-in-law (husband of Avdotya) - Anatoly Chubais (Chubaitis) . Grandson - footballer and film producer Danila Ippolitov (Avdotya’s son from marriage with art critic Arkady Ippolitov ).
