Background
Much of the material that was published on the plate “hours ...” was originally used in other versions in the video game “ Omikron - The Nomad Soul ”. A feature of this game was that David Bowie, his wife Iman , guitarist Reeves Gabrels , and bass guitarist Gail Ann Dorsey appeared in it as game characters, and on the basis of Bowie made two characters at once.
In order to attract interest to the upcoming album, the Bowie.Net contest was held on Bowie's personal website, the Cyber Song contest was held, the quiz task was to write the text for the early instrumental version of the song “What's Really Happening?”. The winning song entered the album on "hours ...". The winner of the competition, Alex Grant, also won a trip to Fillip Glass's “Looking Glass Studios” on May 24, 1999, to watch Bowie record the final vocals, as well as this recording was broadcast online. Grant performed backing vocals for the song, along with a friend who accompanied him. Bowie also marked “ special creativity award ” ( eng. “Special creativity award” ) to the song “Love Among Puppets” by Derek Donovan, the track that Donovan sent to Bowie’s website, combined elements of the original instrumental composition with his own new record. In 1999, David Bowie took part in the television show Adriano Celentano Francamente me ne infischio where he performed the song "Thursday's Child".
The cover design was made by Rex Rey , the photo was taken by Tim Bret Day ( Eng. Tim Bret Day ) and Frank Ockenfels ( Eng. Frank Ockenfels ), it depicts the image of Bowie with a short hairstyle from the intensely energetic Earthling (David's previous album), tired resting on the hands of a long-haired, more young character Bowie. Indeed, “hours ...” is a more mature album than its predecessor, and contains numerous references to the beginning of Bowie’s musical career (especially the early 1970s). The covers of the first editions were biconvex, which created a three-dimensional image effect .
In January 2005, the new record label Bowie ISO Records re-released the album “hours ...” on two discs, the second disc contained remixes, alternative versions of songs, and B-sides of singles.
It was the first studio album since “ The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars ”, which did not make it to the American Top-40 , reaching only 47 lines of the hit parade.
