Kiss me kat

“ Kiss me, Kate ” ( born Kiss Me, Kate ) is a musical created by Cole Porter . Built on the principle of "story in the story", and the inner plot is a play by William Shakespeare's " The Taming of the Shrew ." The premiere of the musical took place on December 30, 1948. [2] The initial cast included Alfred Drake , Patricia Morison , Lisa Kirk And Harold Lang . [3] "Kiss me, Kate" was one of the most successful works of Porter and his only musical that withstood more than 1000 performances on Broadway . [4] In 1953, George Sydney's film of the same name was released (it is duplicated in Russian under the title “ Kiss me, Kat ” [5] ).

Content

Creation History

Porter's wife, Linda, introduced him to journalists Samuel and Bella Spevak. [2] The couple had a fiery temperament, their marital life was constantly on the verge of divorce, which inspired Bella to write the modern version of Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare. [2] Porter had an idea to make a musical according to this scenario.

Story

Act I

Fred Graham ( eng. Fred Graham ) puts a musical based on "The Taming of the Shrew." The role of Petruccio is played by himself, the role of Katerina (“Kat”) is his former wife, the movie star Lilli Vanessi ( Lilli Vanessi ). Fred and Lilly are constantly cursing how only lovers can swear. The role of Bianchi is played by the new girlfriend of Fred, Lois Lane ( Lois Lane ), but she is in love with the performer of the role of Lucienio Bill Calhoun . Calhoun is a player . It turns out that he signed a bill for 10 thousand dollars in the name of Fred.

Fred's flowers, sent by Lois, mistakenly deliver Lilly, who realizes that she still loves Fred, although she is engaged to an influential senator . During the play, Lilly learns that an error occurred, makes a scandal right on the stage and puts the whole production in jeopardy At the same time, two gangsters come to demand debt from Fred, whose name is signed by a bill. Fred is vital to the successful premiere of the play, because only commercial success will save him from gangsters. He uses them to keep Lilly from leaving the show.

Act II

Stage action develops: Petruccio marries Catherine and soon begins to miss bachelor life. The gangsters get the news that their boss has been killed, so it doesn't make sense to demand debt from Fred. Lilly leaves. On stage, Bianca and Calhoun get married. Before the end of the play, Lilly unexpectedly appears and explains to Fred in love from Catherine's face. Beloved ones reunite.
