The temple was founded in 1319. The money for its construction was raised by Zhang Lusun (1248-1321), an official of the Yuan Dynasty who was a disciple of Zhang Daolin . Since Zhang Lusun died shortly after the start of construction, work was continued by his student Wu Quanjie (1269–1346). In 1322, the construction of the main halls and the main entrance was completed. In 1447, the temple was restored and received its current name. The temple was rebuilt in 1698 and in 1761. In the XX century, the temple was closed and used as a school, an administrative building, and even as a residential building, until in 1996 it was declared a national treasure. In 2002, the temple was restored.
The temple complex covers an area of 4.7 hectares. It consists of three courtyards and 376 rooms.
