Chelubey (in some sources Chalabay, Chelybey, Temir-Mirza or Tavrul ) - the character of " Tales of the Mamaev Massacre " - a literary work of the XV century.

According to the “Legend ...”, Chelubey was distinguished not only by physical strength, but also by special skill of military training. According to the plot, on September 8, 1380, a Turkic hero from the army of the Temnik of Mamai, before the start of the Kulikovo battle, fought with the monk Peresvet and both fighters supposedly died in battle, while simultaneously piercing each other with spears .

However, this episode is most likely fictional, like Chelubey himself, and the monk Peresvet [1] . So, in the text of Zadonshchina , one can see that Peresvet, being alive in the midst of the battle, “jumps on his good horse on the field, and makes it green with his armor”, when “others are already split” [1] [2] .

In various editions of “Tales ...” the Pechenegsin has different names: “Temir-murza” (in the Cyprian edition), “Tavrul”. The name “Mankind” appears in the third edition of the Synopsis of 1680 [3] , from where the popular tradition “Tales ...” began. From the popular literature of the XVIII-XIX centuries, the name “Chelubey” came into the works of fiction and art, completely displacing its predecessors [4] .

The name "Chelubey (Chalabay)" is of Turkic origin, judging by the composition and sound (cf. Celebi ). The son of Sultan Murad I, who took the city of Tarnovo in 1393, the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom , bore the name "Chelyabi-Emir" [4] .
