Biography
Saint Bertan, a follower of Saint Columban of Ireland, was for a long time the abbot of Sithiu Monastery , located in the city of Saint-Omer and founded by Audomar , known as Saint Omer. Originally consecrated in honor of St. Martin of Tours , this monastery began to bear the name of St. Bertan after his death.
Saint Bertan was sent by Audomar to those lands for a sermon together with two monks, Momelin and Ebertram . He founded a monastery in which in the middle of the XI century a temple was erected, from which the chapters and the remains of the mosaic were preserved, which are in the museum of the Sandelin hotel in Saint-Omer.
Another Gothic church in honor of St. Bertan was erected from white limestone in the XIV century (from 1325 to 1520 , according to the chronicles). This temple collapsed as the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary became the center of the religious life of the city.
