Grammaticality

Grammar ( grammatical correctness [1] ) - in linguistics : the correspondence of an expression to the existing grammatical models of a particular language [1] .

Grammar and Competency

N. Chomsky believes that the set of grammatically correct sentences is supposedly infinite and cannot be identified with any set of statements obtained in the course of the study [2] . In the framework of the theory of transformational generative grammars, the basis of all grammatical sentences is recognized as a system of rules that ensures the production and understanding of sentences by native speakers . Possession of this system of rules ensures knowledge of the language, in other words, the linguistic competence of the carrier [3] .

Grammar and meaningfulness

According to N. Chomsky, the concept of grammatical correctness cannot be identified with the concepts of meaningfulness or significance: for example, his example Colorless green ideas sleep furiously ( Rus. Colorless green thoughts sleep violently ) is a grammatical, and equally meaningless sentence * Furiously sleep ideas green colorless does not correspond to the grammar of the English language [2] .
