History

Novo was founded around 1830 , received the status of a city from 1841 . It became the place of creation of two communities : the settlements of Mormon ( 1839 ) and Ikaria ( 1850 ).

After leaving Missouri in 1839, the Mormons bought this town, then called Commerce , changed its name to Nova and decided to make it their capital. It grew rapidly due to the influx of Mormons from England , and in 1845 its population was at least 12 thousand people, that is, Novo at that time was the largest city in Illinois. In 1846, as a result of clashes with the locals ( Mormon War ), Mormons were forced to leave it.

Ikaria lasted from 1850 to 1856 . Later Germans settled in the town, engaged in winemaking and cheese production.

Now every year in the autumn, a grape festival and a ceremony called "The Marriage of Wine and Cheese" are held.

The city suffered during the 1993 floods.

Attractions
