The island is located in the northern Atlantic Ocean . It is the remainder of the volcanic cone, consists of basalt . It rises 43 meters above sea level.
If the Azores are considered part of Europe, then the island of Monchique will be the westernmost point of Europe.
The island was an important landmark for sailors during the sailing fleet.
