History
The wooden church of St. Sergius of Radonezh is mentioned in an ancient settlement on the territory of present-day Plavsk (Krapivenskaya Sloboda) in 1640. By the name of the temple, the settlement subsequently became known as Sergievsky.
After the transfer of land in the Plava basin to the princes Gagarin in the central part of the village, construction began. In 1767, permission was obtained to build a new church at the entrance to the estate from the side of the trading square, on a hill. By 1774 a stone church with wooden domes was built there in the name of St. Sergius. During his consecration, all church utensils and relics stored in the old church, including the antimins , consecrated back in the 17th century, were transferred. In this form, the temple lasted until 1860.
In the 1860s and 70s, the temple was rebuilt; reconstruction was carried out at the expense of Prince S. S. Gagarin, as well as merchants Cheryomushkin, Sazonov and funds of parishioners. First, the western part of the church was redone: a two-part warm refectory church was built with chapels in the name of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God and St. Nicholas . For the new bell tower, the merchant B.F. Cheryomushkin bought a watch in Strasbourg for 3,500 rubles. 4 bells were also installed (the inner bell in the lower part was 2m 40cm in diameter), shot in the autumn of 1941 before the Germans arrived. Then they began the reconstruction of the central main volume, which was consecrated on July 20, 1876.
During the reconstruction of the church and the appearance of new chapels, the number of priests increased, and the village community allocated them allotments of land for settlement (this settlement became known as Popovskaya).
Current status
In 1938 the temple was closed. The mechanism and details of the watch were lost, the interiors were damaged, the icons were burned during the war (the iconostasis itself remained intact). In 1956, the temple was returned to the church.
