Biography
Born in the village of Pokrovka now Vorotynsky district of Nizhny Novgorod region .
In the Red Army since 1919 . During the Civil War, I. V. Galanin, a private soldier, fought on the Eastern Front . In 1921, as commander of the cadet department, he took part in the suppression of the Kronstadt uprising .
In the interwar period from 1921, I. V. Galanin commanded a platoon and a company of cadets in the 1st Soviet Joint Military School of the Red Army named after the All-Russian Central Executive Committee , then a company of the Office of the Commandant of the Moscow Kremlin . He graduated from the military school to them. The All-Russian Central Executive Committee ( 1923 ), the Shooting and Tactical courses for the improvement of the Red Army commanders "Vystrel" them. During the Great Patriotic War , the Galanin corps, as part of the 18th Army, participated in border battles, reflecting the attack of superior enemy forces on Right Bank Ukraine . In July 1941, the corps led fierce battles in the Uman direction. In difficult conditions of operational and tactical situation I. V. Galanin showed firmness and perseverance in the conduct of defense and combat operations in the environment. From August 1941, I. V. Galanin - Commander of the 12th Army of the Southern Front, at the head of which he participated in the Donbass-Rostov defensive operation . Since November - the commander of the 59th army of the Volkhov front, participated in the counteroffensive near the city of Tikhvin . From April 1942 - Commander of the Army Group of Forces of the 16th Army of the Western Front, in June-August - Deputy Commander of the 33rd Army of the same Front, and since August Deputy Commander of the Voronezh Front . From October 1942, I. V. Galanin - commander of the 24th Army of the Don Front, which participated in the Battle of Stalingrad .
At the end of January 1943, the army administration was withdrawn to the reserve of the Supreme Command Headquarters and subsequently redeployed to the city of Voronezh ( Steppe Military District ), where it was transformed into the 4th Guards Army . On January 27, 1943, I. V. Galanin was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general . In April 1943 he was appointed commander of the 70th Army of the Central Front, which participated in the Battle of Kursk . The army under his command participated in repelling the attacks of the shock group of the German 9th Army , which was trying to break through to Kursk from the north. With the transition of the Soviet troops to the counteroffensive, the Galanin army participated in the Oryol operation , advancing on the village of Trosna, south of the village of Kromy . After this, the army command was withdrawn to the Supreme Command Headquarters reserve, and in September I.V. Galanin was again appointed commander of the 4th Guards Army . The army under his command as part of the Voronezh, then Steppe and 2nd Ukrainian fronts participated in the Belgorod-Kharkov offensive operation . Developing the offensive, the army reached the Dnieper , forced it, and in November-December 1943, in the course of the Znamenskaya operation, fought successfully to expand the bridgehead in the Krivoi Rog sector.
In January 1944, the army participated in the Kirovograd offensive operation . At the end of January-February 1944, I. V. Galanin — commander of the 53rd Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, which under his leadership participated in the encirclement and destruction of the enemy in the Korsun-Shevchenko Operation . Then, from February to November 1944, I. V. Galanin again commanded the 4th Guards Army , skillfully and firmly controlled its troops during the Uman-Botoshan , Yassko-Kishinev and Budapest offensive operations.
After the war from November 1945, I. V. Galanin was appointed deputy commander of the 7th rifle corps in the Group of Soviet Occupation Forces in Germany. Since September 1946, retired. He died on November 12, 1958 in Moscow . He was buried at Vvedensky cemetery in Moscow.
