Criticism

The song has received very high recognition and many positive reviews. Rolling Stone said it was "an attempt to get an inspirational ballad." Other mass media adhere to the same opinion, asserting that ““ Relapse ”amazes with its track“ Beautiful ” [5] . “Billboard” called the song “epic” and described it as “part of confession” (“I'm just depressed”, this is how the song begins in the version with censorship) and “part of“ Lose Yourself ””, also adding that ““ Beautiful ” encapsulates the introspective nature of „Relapse“, but deviates from the shock tactics that dominate the album ” [6] .

The song was nominated for the 52nd Grammy Awards in the Best Solo Rap Performance category, but lost to Jay-Z's “ DOA ” [7] .

Music Video

The video was filmed in Detroit , directed by Anthony Mandler. The premiere took place on July 2, 2009 on “ Yahoo! " [8] .

The video opens with the text stating that "in 1950, Michigan was one of the 8 states of America that produced 36% of the world's GNP," and also that "Detroit was the largest industrial city in the world." Then modern images of the city begin to appear, showing Eminem passing through three abandoned buildings, symbols of the era of the Arsenal of Democracy (Michigan Central Station, former Packard plant and Tiger Stadium), and several people corresponding to each building (old woman with a suitcase, several automakers holding their breakfast boxes and tools, and a youth baseball team). Although the original song contains three verses, only the first two are presented in the music video.

Interesting

  • There are two versions of the video, censored and full.
  • The initial release of the video was to be held on “ iTunes ”.
  • Few people know that the intro from “Beautiful” contains the sample song “Reaching Out” , originally written by the band “ Rock Therapy ”.
