“ Devi-mahatmya ” or “ Devi-mahatmyam ” ( Sanskrit देवीमाहात्म्यम् , devīmāhātmyam IAST , “Glorification of Devi ”) is a Hindu text , the most important and sacred text of Shaktism , which plays a central role in the ritual practices of this tradition. Describes the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura . The Devi Mahatmya is part of the Markandeya Purana and dates back to the fifth century . The Hindu tradition attributes authorship of the text to the Vedic sage Markandeya . It consists of 13 chapters and 700 verses.

Scientists consider the “Devi Mahatmya” as an attempt in the Middle Ages to unite the Vedic male pantheon with the cult of the Mother Goddess. [1] In the "Devi Mahatmya", a skillful synthesis of a number of earlier myths about the Goddess of both Aryan and non-Aryan origin was made. [2] The text also contains references to some aspects of the Sankhya philosophy.

In 2009, the text of the Devi Mahatmyam was translated from Sanskrit into Russian by Andrei Ignatiev .
