Chagas (ship)

Chagas is a Portuguese trading galleon .

In June 1594, the Chagas was returning from the Indian colony. According to evidence and archival documents, it contained treasures worth two million ducats [1] (about 7 tons of gold [2] ). It was the most expensive cargo ever sent to Europe from India [3] , as well as an unknown amount of diamonds , rubies and pearls [4] . On board the galleon were sailors and 500 thousand ducats from two crashed Portuguese schooners [4] . During the flight aboard the overloaded Chagas, several epidemics broke out at once. The island of Fayal collided with four English ships. During the cannon fire in the powder hold of the ship "Chagas" fire broke out. Galleon Chagas sank in the Atlantic Ocean . Repeated attempts have been made to find the sunken ship and its gold, but attempts have so far been unsuccessful. The value of the sunken cargo is estimated at 1 billion US dollars [4] .
