Constitutional provision
The Constitution adopted in 1997 is devoted to articles 39–45 of the Presidential Institute. According to her, the president is elected from the members of the National Assembly by a majority of its members for five years (the terms of office of the president and parliament coincide). One and the same person cannot hold a post more than two times.
The President is the head of the executive branch, with the consent of the National Assembly, appoints ministers, judges of the Supreme Court and other officials, and exercises diplomatic representation.
However, the 1997 constitution did not enter into force [1] . Since 1993, Isayas Afevorki has been the president of the country.
