Arvid Barshevsky ( Arvids Barshevskis , Latvian. Arvīds Barševskis ), p. September 20, 1965 , Kraslava district [1] Latvian SSR , USSR ) - Rector of Daugavpils University , since January 15, 2010 Chairman of the Latvian Council of Rectors. [2] On November 24, 2011 he was elected an academician of the Latvian Academy of Sciences , becoming the first academician in Latgale [3] . He was elected at a university meeting on June 6, 2007 [4] , and in September 2007 he was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Lithuania. He replaced Zaigu Ikere at the end of her term of office, before that he had been the vice-rector for science [5] . Professor, Doctor of Biology headed the Baltic Institute of Coleopterology at the University, editor of the scientific journal “Baltic Journal of Coleopterology”.

The author of more than 87 scientific publications. The doctoral work was on the topic “Austrumlatvijas skrejvaboles” (“Ground beetles of eastern Latvia”).
The surname A. Barshevskis was assigned to a new species of beetles found in Spain [6] [7] .. In honor of the rector of DU, the second beetle was named, found in the Pamirs in Tajikistan [8]

Biography
From 1983 to 1988 - a student of the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry of the Daugavpils Pedagogical Institute.
From 1988 to 2003 - he taught at the Daugavpils Pedagogical Institute (from 1993 - University)
From 1989 to 1991, he studied entomology at the graduate school of the profile department of the Biological Faculty of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov under the guidance of professor and USSR State Prize laureate Rustem Devletovich Zhantiev . He defended his thesis in 1991 .
In 1994 he defended his doctoral dissertation in biology at the University of Latvia .
From 1999 to 2004 - Deputy Chairman of the Senate of Daugavpils University.
From 1999 to 2007 - Director of the Baltic Institute of Coleopterology .
From 1999 to 2002 - Director of the Biology Study Program, Department of Biology, Daugavpils University.
Since 2001 - Editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Baltic Journal of Coleopterology and Acta Biologica Universitatis Daugavpiliensis.
From 2002 to 2004 - the chairman of the constituent assembly of the Daugavpils University.
Since 2003 - Professor, Department of Biology, Daugavpils University.
From 2002 to 2007 - Vice-Rector for Science at the University of Daugavpils.
Since 2007 - rector of the Daugavpils University . He was elected at a university meeting on June 6, 2007 [4] , and in September 2007 he was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Lithuania. He replaced Zaigu Ikere at the post after the expiration of her powers. [5] .
Since January 15, 2010, Chairman of the Latvian Council of Rectors. [2]
On May 30, 2012, he was re-elected for a second five-year term by the rector at a meeting of the University of 158 votes (140 for, 4 abstained, 14 against).
May 26, 2012 he was accepted as an honorary philistine in the Russian student corporation Fraternitas Arctica.
In January 2018, for the fifth time, he was re-elected Chairman of the Council of Rectors of the Republic of Lithuania [9] .
On April 24, 2018, after approval by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, he was replaced by the new rector of Kokin, Irena .
On May 7, 2018, the Senate of the DU was elected Vice-Rector for Science.

Rewards
- On July 1, 2009, the Merit Cross of the Republic of Poland for the development of Polish-Latvian cooperation in science was awarded in Lublin [10]
- Order of Friendship ( Russia , July 6, 2010 ) - for his great contribution to the strengthening and development of Russian-Latvian cultural ties and the popularization of the Russian language in Latvia [11]
- On June 4, 2010 he was awarded the title of Honorary Daugavpilchanin as part of the celebration of the 735th anniversary of the city.
