History
It has been published since 1971 . The chief editors in 1971 - 1993 were literary critics, translators Vaclav Kubatsky and Vaclav Sadkovsky. Currently, the magazine is led by the poet and translator of English poetry, Peter Sommer . Among the editors, among many other major writers and translators, were L. Engelking , A. Sosnovsky . To date (mid- 2013 ) 501 issues of the journal have been published.
Publishing Principles
As a rule, each issue is thematic and is dedicated either to one or another national literature (Swedish, Maghreb, Belgian, etc.), or to some significant literary and, more broadly, cultural phenomenon ( Holocaust literature, New York poetry school ) or a separate author (e.g. Joyce , Nabokov , Michel Leiris , Walter Benjamin , Carlo Emilio Gadde , Fernando Pessoa ). Many materials on magazine pages address the theory and practice of translation.
The addressee of the magazine is, first of all, tomorrow's writers and poets, on whom, as can be seen in the four decades of its publication, the magazine really has a great impact .
Other activities
The magazine awards literary prizes in several categories.
