Big Fatra ( Slovak. Veľká Fatra , Velka Fatra ) is a mountain range in northern Slovakia , part of the Fatransko-Tatran region. The highest point is Mount Ostredok , 1592 m. It is interesting that the Big Fatra is lower than the Small . Big Fatra serves as the eastern border of the historical region of Turec .

In 1971, the territory of Big Fatra was declared a reserve, and since April 1, 2002 it has been a National Park. About 1000 species of rare plants grow in the reserve, here is the largest yew grove in Europe . Almost 90% of the territory is covered with beech , fir , spruce is also found.
A significant part of the ridge is composed of various Mesozoic rocks. The central part consists of shales , the south and southwest of limestone and dolomite .
