History
The area was created in 1974 under the name The Wrekin ( English The Wrekin ) as a district of the non-metropolitan county of Shropshire .
The city of Telford was built in the late 1960s - early 1970s, and was managed by the Telford Development Corporation. After the formation of the district, the Corporation was transformed into the Council of the Te-Rikin district. Telford included the pre-existing cities of Dowley, Madelie, Oakengates and Wellington. The second largest city in the area is Newport, located north of Telford.
