Biography

Born in 1937 in a peasant family. Parents introduced children to the Church from childhood. He graduated from high school. He worked in Leningrad as a turner.

In 1966 he graduated from the Leningrad Theological Seminary. In 1970, he graduated from the Leningrad Theological Academy with a candidate of theology degree.

December 13, 1968 in the temple of the Leningrad Academy, Metropolitan of Leningrad Nicodemus (Rotov) was tonsured a monk with the name Damaskin in honor of St. John of Damascus . December 17 was ordained a hierodeacon , March 29, 1970 - in a hieromonk .

Since October 1970, he served as head of the Holy Cross Church of the village of Opole of the Leningrad Diocese.

Since April 1971 - rector of the Trinity Church in the city of Vsevolozhsk .

In 1972, on the occasion of Holy Easter, he was elevated to the rank of hegumen. On October 11, 1972, by the decision of the Holy Synod, he was determined to be bishop of Tambov and Michurinsky [1] .

On October 18, 1972, in the Epiphany Patriarchal Cathedral in Moscow, he was consecrated bishop of Tambov and Michurinsky . The consecration was performed by Metropolitan of Tallinn and Estonia Alexy (Ridiger) , Archbishop of Vologda and Velikoustyuzhsky Mikhail (Chub) , Archbishop of Krasnodar and Kuban Alexy (Konoplev) , Archbishop of Dmitrov Filaret (Vakhromeev) , Bishop of Tashkent and Srefomiyeazyateazi, Zapomophei region , Martishkin) , Bishop Anatoliy of Vilensky and Lithuania (Kuznetsov) , Simon (Novikov) , Bishop of Ryazan and Kasimovsky [2] .

During the reign of Bishop Damaskin, there was a major conflict in the parish of the church in the village of Ivanovka, Sampursky District [3] , which served as one of the reasons for his transfer to the Vologda Department on September 3, 1974.

According to Archpriest Georgy Ivanov, by that time out of 17 churches of the diocese, services were conducted only in 12, since there was no clergy, and after all the confusion the diocese was prepared to be ascribed to Yaroslavl or Arkhangelsk, and Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov) decided that it was impossible to allow “such an ancient pulpit to lose its independence”, he got here the appointment of Bishop Damaskin, whom Archpriest George characterized as follows: “He was a wonderful, bright man. Many prominent people - the head of the visa service, the chief prosecutor, the chief cardiologist - all of him secretly nourished. He himself baptized everyone at home. He “removed” Matisov’s commissioner, asked the authorities and managed to convince him that he was not working. And “set” Valentin Pavlovich Nikolaev. He believed in communion with Vladyka Damaskin! And he said when he was dying: “I want to be remembered in the church.” Vladyka in five years filled all the vacancies. All 17 churches began to serve, everything flourished. The house has been completely renovated. I got a brand new black “ Volga ”, I left it to Vladyka Mikhail (Mudyugin) . He has done so much good here! So many things revived, updated! The sermon was under control, so Vladyka spoke very modestly, very wisely, always quoted the lives of the saints. <...> He spoke in the evening and in the morning. The whole cathedral was blessed. People cried when he was leaving. How many young people instructed, the diocese simply breathed. And he was transferred, as the Synod promised. Five years later, he went to Poltava for promotion ” [4] .

The principled position of the bishop in relation to the Resurrection Cathedral of the city of Cherepovets and its shrines during the period of the proposed reconstruction of the city largely contributed to the preservation of this historic church.

Since September 12, 1979 - Bishop of Poltava and Kremenchug .

In August 1983, as part of a pilgrimage group of the Russian Orthodox Church, he visited Mount Athos .

On April 19, 1985 he was appointed bishop of Mukachevsky and Uzhgorod .

Under Bishop Damaskin was the anniversary of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia , which was celebrated with special solemnity in Transcarpathia .

He died suddenly on July 1, 1989. He was buried in the Mukachevo St. Nicholas convent .
