Education

Born in the family of the deacon . He graduated from the Kazan Theological Academy in 1917 with the degree of candidate of theology (the topic of his thesis is “N. I. Novikov (life and worldview)”), the Higher Social and Law Institute in Sevastopol in 1921 , the faculty of the Russian language at the Evening Pedagogical Institute in Moscow in 1929 .

Master of Theology ( 1950 , thesis: "Homiletics (academic lectures on the theory and practice of church-Orthodox preaching) for the second year of the Academy"). Doctor of Theology ( 1967 , dissertation topic: “The Divine Liturgy (Experience of Explanation as Applied to the Requirements of Pastoral Counseling)”).

Priest and Professor

Until 1945 he worked in the national education system. March 10, 1945 ordained priest. From 1945 - Associate Professor, in 1950–1957 and in 1965–1976 - Professor in the Department of Homiletics and Moral Theology at the Moscow Theological Academy . He was one of the scientists who received a higher spiritual education in the pre-revolutionary academy and continued its scientific and educational traditions in the Soviet era. He told his students: “Taken perceived more with the heart than with the mind. Be sensitive and attentive to people, help them, take care of them. But the most important thing is to give rise to the growth of the seed of holiness laid down in us by the Lord. The first step towards holiness is the fulfillment of God's command to love one’s neighbor. ”

Among his students are a number of prominent figures of the Russian Orthodox Church , as well as Evgraf Duluman , known for his work in the field of scientific atheism .

In 1957–1965 he served in the parish in Moscow. He was a priest in the Assumption Church of the Novodevichy Monastery, in the Church of St. Pimen the Great, in the Pokrovsky Church, which is on Lyschikova Hill, in the Znamensky Church near the Riga station.

Scientist Memories

Metropolitan Pitirim (Nechaev) spoke of Professor Archpriest Alexander Vetelev: “His theology was not a word, but a deed, not a title, but a being, not a form, but life itself. He flamed both in our classes and in those conversations that he conducted with students until late at night, regardless of strength or time. Whenever anyone came to him, he always took a hot, lively part in all that excites the student soul. His deep education, knowledge of secular sciences, love and insight into spiritual science, knowledge of the heritage of the Fathers of the Church, the human soul made him a true teacher, teacher, lover, teacher exemplary. ”

Bishop Sergius (Sokolov) recalled him: “Often, watching the elder professor, I could not hide my surprise by his actions. In a separate pocket of his coat there were always “rubles”, which he generously distributed to many beggars, who were waiting for their benefactor at the gates and on the alleys of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra . Once I tried to convince the priest not to give alms to a drunken beggar, but in response I heard from Father Alexander that, before reasoning in this way, it would be useful for us to mentally imagine ourselves in the place of the begger, and then all indecision will leave us, for it is said in the Gospel : „ Give to the one who asks from you. " It should always be submitted, he taught, because we do not know the circumstances of the life of the begging person. And it's not in the pennies that we can give him, and most importantly - in attention to his misfortune. Therefore, without fail our alms should be accompanied by a prayer for the unfortunate, for what God gives him is undoubtedly more significant for him than our charity. ”
