It originates on the hills of Exmoor , 8.4 km south of the coast of the Gulf of Bristol , flows first in the southeast, then in the south, past Delverton , Tiverton and Exeter . From Tiverton the river becomes navigable . At Exmouth , on the south coast of Devon, the river flows into the English Channel , Lyme , spilling into a vast . Left tributaries: , Kalm , Klist . Right tributaries: Barl , Creedy .
History
The name of the river comes from the Celtic word " Isca ", which translates as "water" [1] . The river gave the name to the cities of Exeter , Exmouth , , , , and many other settlements along its course.
In the Middle Ages, the river was of great economic importance. The first industrial area of the city of Exeter was located just on the river west of the city. Many water mills , paper and textile enterprises have been built in the area. Wetlands in the area of the river are drained and used for agricultural needs [2] . In the 13th century, on the orders of Countess , a dam was built on the river [3] . In 1563, was built on the river.
River Inhabitants
During low tide, large amounts of silt remain on the vast banks of the river, which is an important source of food for marsh birds. The mouth of the Ex River is a wintering ground for waders . Brown trout and grayling live in the river, and salmon live in the lower reaches of the river.
