12th Century Cistercian Nokmoy Abbey Ruins
This place is famous for the nearby ruins of Nokmoy Abbey, founded in 1190 by the kings of Connacht [2] . The abbey was the burial place of King Connaught Katal Krobberg ( Cathal Crobhdearg Ua Conchobair ). It well preserved medieval frescoes and sculptures. The village was once part of the Soghain Kingdom in Connacht.
The Cistercian monks from the Boyle Abbey [3] were located in the monastery, and the king himself at the end of his life became a monk, died in 1224 and was buried in the monastery [4] .
