History
The Miss Brazil competition appeared in the 1920s after such a trend around the world during this period. The famous controversy occurred when Miss Brazil 1929 participated in the Miss Miss Goodwill International Competition, despite the victory she did not receive the title. [1] The anger of the Brazilians about placing their participants in an international competition in 1930 led to 2 separate Miss Universe contests this year. In the Brazilian contest "Miss Brazil received the title Miss Universe while in the American competition" Miss USA "received the title. [2] The contest" Miss Brazil ", like many others in the world, was discontinued due to the Great Depression and World War II The modern competition was created in Petropolis , Rio de Janeiro in 1954. At the first Miss Brazil competition, won by Bahia representative Marta Rocha, it was organized by the newspaper Folla di São Paulo .
Organization of the contest
In 1955, a Brazilian media businessman, journalist Assis Chateaubriand bought the rights to the Miss Brazil contest, the winner of the contest began to participate in the Miss Universe and Miss World (Brazil began participating in 1958) as well as in Miss International competition (Brazil began in 1960, when the competition was created).
Quintandinha
Miss Brazil's first four competitions from 1954 to 1957 were held at Palácio Quitandinha, Petropolis . When media groups took on the promotion of the competition, it became national.
All national contest winners during this period were placed at the Miss Universe contest, which took place in Long Beach , California, USA.
Maracanãzinho in the Golden Years
By the name of Miss Brazil, a golden era (started in 1958 when the competition was moved from Petropolis to the federal district at the time, Rio de Janeiro ), Rio Grande do Sul leader Yeda Maria Vargas from Bahia Miss Universe contest winners 1963 and 1968 (defeated Miss Brazil). And Maria da Gloria Carvalho received the title of Miss International , while in 1971, Lucia Tavares Peterle was elected “Miss World”.
Adalgiza Colombo and Rezhani Vieira Costa were the first vice-miss at the Miss Universe contests in 1958 and 1972 respectively. (See table of winners for 1959, 1962, 1971 and 1979.)
In 1973, due to a lack of public interest in the media and possible feminist protests, the organizers moved the venue to the competition in the capital, Brasilia . Miss Brazil 1972 (Vieira Costa) was the last of which was Maracanãzinho's dependency.
Competition Crisis
After the Miss Brazil competition, 1972 moved to the federal capital, Brasilia , due to a lack of public interest, the competition lasted from 1973 to 1980 (when Associados was sold due to bankruptcy.
In 1976, a cosmetics company led by Helena Rubinstein refused to fund the Miss Brazil contest. Thus, the Catalina Swimwear brand continued to support the organization in those years until the mid-1980s (when broadcasting rights were vested in SBT).
All Brazilian presidents of this period (with the exception of Ernesto Geisel ) received Miss Brazil contestants in the Alvorada Palace.
Criticism
In the 80s, the Miss Brazil contest was known as the Brega period, according to fans and television critics. Because the lack of ratings and announcers, SBT led to the end of the promotion of the Miss Brazil competition in April 1990, when the country did not participate in the Miss Universe 1990 .
Change Format
During this period, Miss Brazil was held as a separate competition for the Miss Universe contest (of the most anticipated and important), separate for Miss World and separate for Miss International. The SBT television company runs contests across the country in the Silvio Santos Program and locally in affiliates such as TV Alterosa ( Minas Gerais ) and TV Itapoan ( Bahia ).
Marlene Brito and others
In 1990, SBT's former producer, Marlene Brito, managed the broadcast until 1993, when Leyla Schuster was crowned without a traditional contest, but her name was listed as representing the country at the 1993 Miss Universe pageant . Since 1994, the Miss Brazil competition has been organized by various directors, including former host Paula Max.
The current director, Niall Micherif, and Boanerges Gaeta, Jr., took over the partnership functions in 2002. Since this year, the competition is again held as part of the national television show, after some broadcasting it in the 90s on local channels.
