Pyanj district ( taj. Noҳiyai Panҷ ) is an administrative district in the Khatlon region of the Republic of Tajikistan .

It was founded on August 29, 1930 as the Saray-Kamara district as part of the Kurgan-Tyube region of the Tajik SSR . In 1931 - 1936 it was called Baumanabad, in 1936 - 1963 - Kirovabad region.
The regional center is a Panj urban-type settlement located on the Dushanbe - Kulyab automobile road, 117 km southeast of Kurgan-Tyube and 2 km from the railway station. The distance to Dushanbe is 206 km.
The territory of the Panj district is 880.6 km 2 . The population is mainly engaged in agriculture.

History
This region, inhabited from ancient times, was known as Bactria , where tribes who spoke Iranian languages lived. He once belonged to the Persian Empire of the Achaemenids conquered in the 4th century BC. e. By Alexander the Great .
Later, the Greco-Bactrian kingdom arose here, which fell under the blows of other powers. Islamization of the region took place in the VIII-IX centuries, and from the XVII century the lands of the Panj district were owned by the emirs of Bukhara.
Geography
The Panj district is located in the Panj River Valley, along which the border with Afghanistan passes. In the north it borders with the Rumi region , in the east - with the Farkhor region , in the west - with the Kumsangir district of the Khatlon region of Tajikistan, in the south - with the Imam-Sahib and Archi regions of Kunduz province of Afghanistan.
The territory of the district is heterogeneous. Its eastern part is the southern ridges of the Hazratishokh ridge . The western is a fertile plain, part of the floodplain of the Panj valley. The main economic base of the region is concentrated here and the bulk of the population lives.

The population as of January 1, 2015 is estimated at 104,900 people, including the urban population in the village of Pyanj - 11.2% or 11,700 people [1] .

The head of the Panj district is the Chairman of the Hukumat, who is appointed by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan . The head of government of the Pyanj region is the Chairman of the Hukumat. The legislative body of the Pyanj district is the Majlis of people's deputies, which is popularly elected for 5 years.
