Biography
Ilya Berezin was born on July 20, 1818 [4] at the Yugovsky State-owned factories [4] of the Perm district of the Perm province (now the village of South Perm district of the Perm region) in the family of a college secretary [4] . After home education, he received his initial education at a district school in Yekaterinburg , from where he was transferred by the auditor Professor G. S. Surovtsev to the Perm gymnasium for official maintenance [5] .
At Kazan University
At the end of the course, he entered Kazan University (1837) in the department of Oriental literature, which he graduated as a candidate , not yet reaching the age of 19 [5] . At the university, he worked diligently in the Arabic - Persian language under the guidance of Professor Fyodor Ivanovich Erdman .
At the end of the course in 1837, he was left with a candidate’s degree in the Eastern Department of the Faculty of History and Philology to prepare for the professorship, after which he made a trip to Astrakhan to get to know the life of the Persians and Tatars , and on his return to Kazan he defended his dissertation on the topic: "What contributes to the development of enlightenment and stops its progress in the Mohammedan powers."
In 1841 he received a master 's degree in oriental literature.
In 1842, I.N. Berezin, according to the plan and instructions of Professor Alexander Kasimovich Kazembek [3], was sent on a scientific trip for three years in Dagestan and the Caucasus , Arabia , Turkey , Persia and Egypt , where he studied languages, studied the modern life of peoples, literature and antiquities of eastern states.
Reports on his studies in the East during this time were published in the "Scientific Notes" of Kazan University for 1845-1846.
Returning to Kazan, Berezin from March 19, 1846 holds the position of professor at the Department of Turkish Language. Over the nine-year period of his work, he wrote a number of scholarly treatises and articles in Russian and French.
In the 2-volume “Library of Oriental Historians” (1850-1851), Berezin published the classic works “ Sheybani-name ” and “ Jami-et-Tevarih ”.
At Petersburg University
When at the beginning of the Crimean War, in 1855, the Faculty of Oriental Languages was opened at St. Petersburg University , Berezin, together with A.V. Popov and V.P. Vasiliev , was invited to the post of full professor in the department of Turkish-Tatar literature. In 1870-1873, he served as dean of the faculty, and since 1871 he was an honored professor. On August 30, 1863, Berezin was promoted to full state councilor , and on January 1, 1885 - to privy councilor .
With the move to St. Petersburg, Ilya Nikolaevich took a direct part in journal literature, actively supplying it with popular articles about the East, mainly “Essays” from his travels of 1842–1845.
In addition to his Essays, he also placed many reviews and major critical articles on essays relating to the East, mainly in the Proceedings of the Eastern Branch of the Imperial Russian Archaeological Society , the Journal of the Ministry of Public Education , Herald of Europe , Domestic Notes and others [6] .
In 1864, Berezin defended his dissertation, "An Essay on the Internal Structure of the Dzhuchiev Ulus," which he submitted for the degree of Doctor of Oriental Literature. In the years 1872-1879. Berezin undertook the publication of the 16-volume " Russian Encyclopedic Dictionary " [7] . In 1883-1884 published two volumes of the New Encyclopedic Dictionary, which he wanted to make publicly available in price and brevity.
Ilya Nikolaevich Berezin died on March 22 (April 3), 1896 in St. Petersburg. He was buried in St. Petersburg at the Novodevichy Cemetery [8] .
