Biography
Edmund was the son of English landowner Robert Arrowsmith and Margery Gerard, who came from an aristocratic family known in Lancashire . Among the relatives of Edmund’s mother are Miles Gerard , who was martyred and revered in the Catholic Church as blessed, as well as the English historian John Gerard .
Edmund Arrowsmith was born in 1585 on the outskirts of Winwick . The Edmund family, because of its commitment to Catholicism, was constantly persecuted by the British authorities. In 1605, Edmund went to France in the city of Douai to study there in a seminary as a Catholic priest, but after a while due to poor health he was forced to return to England. In 1607, he continued his studies at Douai. [2]
On December 9, 1612, Edmund Arrowsmith was ordained a priest in the French city of Arras , after which he went on a mission to England, where he secretly began to engage in pastoral activities among English Catholics in Lancashire . He was arrested in 1622 for illegal activities and interrogated by the Anglican bishop of Chester , but was soon pardoned and released by decree of the king along with other Catholic priests.
In 1624, Edmund Arrowsmith entered the monastic order of the Jesuits. At the beginning of 1628, Edmund Arrowsmith was again arrested by slander, convicted as a Jesuit priest, and sentenced to death.
On August 28, 1628, in the Lancaster Castle, he was executed by hanging, evisceration, and quartering .
