Diocese of Portsmouth is a Roman Catholic diocese centered in Portsmouth , Hampshire , England . The diocese was founded on May 19, 1882 by Pope Leo XIII , by isolating from the archdiocese of Southwark , which became too large for one bishop. The diocese is part of Southwark Province .

The diocese area is 6.339 km² and includes the following counties: Hampshire , partly Berkshire south of the Thames, partly Oxfordshire south of the Thames, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands . The diocese has 31 deanship and 112 parishes . The Cathedral is the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on Edinburgh Road in Portsmouth [1] .
Currently, the post of bishop of Portsmouth is Philip Anthony Egan , the 9th bishop of Portsmouth, who succeeded Roger Hollis in 2012.
