Story
Coco is a young man frivolous and loving all kinds of entertainments and pleasures; it doesn’t have the slightest “practical vein” - it really upsets his dear uncle, the good-natured Ponsone, who often chides his nephew for his inability to get involved in something and “get on his feet” in order to earn money on his own and not need financial help relatives. Coco has a girlfriend - a charming Lillette, a sweet and graceful person, but no less frivolous, and certainly not capable of any serious occupation: this is just a lorette from the quarter of San Michel - a lorette unselfish and devoted to her friend, but - alas - quite expensive for our poor Coco, who often suffers from "pocket consumption"; he has a chronic and hardly treatable disease!
But fate begins to smile at him, he receives a letter from his uncle: the old man notifies that he is leaving Paris for some time, and since his apartment is hired under a contract and for a whole year, he gives his nephew to use his premises during his absence . Coco is delighted: a free apartment, and what a spacious and elegant one: with all the amenities, moreover in the most aristocratic locality. Coco moves to his uncle’s apartment, he is surrounded by comfort and even luxury - but not a penny! Everything except money! Where to get this insignificant, despicable metal! And then a brilliant thought comes to his mind, which proves that Coco is far from being as naive and impractical as his uncle had suggested: as soon as the circumstances developed favorably - as soon as his practical wit showed up in full force: he came up with a witty way to get money: for this, you just need to let the tenants into the uncle’s apartment. If you rent rooms separately, then it is very profitable. And so he hangs up an ad at the door: "Furnished rooms are cheap here." Tenants are immediately; one room is occupied by a landowner with a daughter, the other is a poet of a modern school, and the third is an elderly girl.
They all get to know each other, the poet falls in love with the landowner's daughter, the elderly girl Zefirova falls in love with the poet Fioletov, the daughter of the landowner Nyur falls in love with Coco himself, who is ready to forget his Lillette for her sake, and the Saratov landowner falls in love with Lilletta, A terrible confusion occurs, we are faced with a series of funny misunderstandings ... and finally, the whole thing turns out when Uncle Ponsone unexpectedly returns home. Upon learning how cleverly his nephew disposed of his apartment, he admits that he has a “practical vein” and blesses him for marriage with the daughter of a wealthy landowner Stepnyakov. [one]
