The first mention of the building dates back to 1184 , and in one of the historical documents of 1215 the castle is listed by the Greyly family, the barons of Manchester. Initially, the buildings were wooden, and only much later erected in stone. Around the castle were three ditches with water.
In his book Warfare in England ( 1912 ), writer and historian Healer Bellock called Manchester Castle one of the two most important defensive lines of medieval England along with the Thames River line.
