History

The islands got their name from the German scientist Browler, who visited here at the end of the 19th century, saw a huge number of white mute swans and considered that their nesting sites were located there.

The territory was first reserved in 1947 . In 1949, it became a branch of the Crimean Reserve (the future Crimean Nature Reserve ). From the very beginning, the main area of work is the protection of birds. Since the beginning of the 50s of the XX century it has become a research base for ornithologists. The discharge of part of the fresh Dnieper water into the Karnikitsky Bay through channels and collectors also increased the food supply of the islands, which attracted even more birds [2] .

It was under the jurisdiction of the State Administration of Affairs ( Ukrainian State Administration on the right ) until 2014. After the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Federation, the Crimean Nature Reserve, including the Swan Islands, was transferred to the Federal State Budget Institution “Crimea Complex” of the Administrative Department of the President of the Russian Federation [3] . In 2018, the Government of the Russian Federation granted Swan Islands the status of a state nature reserve and excluded it from the Crimean Nature Reserve (transformed into a national park ). Since that time, the reserve has been assigned to the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia [4] .

Geography and climate

Swan islands are located off the northwestern coast of Crimea in the Karkinitsky Gulf of the Black Sea . The reserve includes 6 islands, stretching for 8 km along the coast of Crimea from the south-west to north-east. The islands from Crimea and each other are separated by shallow straits. These small islands are composed of sand-shell sediments and are subject to constant changes in their configuration. From time to time, even a change in the number of islands occurs. The height of the islands above sea level does not exceed 1-2 meters. The largest of the islands is the fourth: about 3.5 km in length, and about 350 m in width. The strictly protected part of the islands covers an area of 52 hectares. The climate is temperate continental , arid. Summer is dry, hot, winter is mild, with little snow with frequent thaws. In particularly severe winters, the straits between the islands and the Crimea freeze.

Nature Reserve

Natural conditions - shallow water, an abundance of plant and animal food - attract many birds, mainly waterfowl. The creation of the reserve favorably affected the number and diversity of registered bird species [2] .
