1981 World Chess Champion Match

The match for the title of world chess champion between world champion M. Chiburdanidze and the challenger N. Alexandria was held from September 7 to October 30, 1981 in Borjomi and Tbilisi .

  • The chief arbiter is M. Philip ( Czechoslovakia ).
  • Second coaches at Chiburdanidze are V. Okhotnik , A. Weingold and I. Polovodin .
  • Second coaches at Alexandria - M. Dvoretsky , D. Dzhanoev and V. Gavrikov .

The 1st half of the match went with the advantage of Chiburdanidze - 4½: 3½. In the 2nd half of the match Alexandria played more successfully. Having won the 11th game, she evened the score in the match. The 15th game turned out to be decisive in the match: having won in it, Chiburdanidze scored the necessary 8 points and retained the title of world champion. For the first time in the history of women's world championship competitions, the final match ended in a draw - 8: 8 (+4 −4 = 8).
