Born in the family of a descendant of Jewish emigrants from Vitebsk, Samuel Henry Nerlov. Bachelor (1952) of the University of Chicago ; Master (1955) and Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University (1956). He taught at Stanford (1960-1965), Yale (1965-1969), Chicago (1969-1974), Northwest (1974-1982), Pennsylvania (1982-1993) and Maryland (since 1993) universities. Awarded the J. B. Clark Medal (1969). President of the Econometric Society (1981).
