Biography

He was born on February 2 ( 14 ), 1839 in Uglich, Yaroslavl Province, in the family of a caretaker of the Uglich National School. Then he studied at the Borisoglebsky Theological College, at the Rostov District School and at the Yaroslavl Gymnasium . In 1855 he entered the Lyceum of Demidov , but two years later left him.

He went to Moscow, where he entered the law faculty of the university . Constantly working part-time, in 1861 he graduated from the course and, on the recommendation of S. M. Solovyov , who paid attention to him, he was left at the university to prepare for a professorship and at the same time was appointed a tutor at the Alexander Military School .

In 1867, he defended his thesis for a master's degree in Russian history, “The History of the Struggle of the Moscow State with the Polish-Lithuanian (1462-1508)” and was appointed assistant professor at Kharkov University . In 1870, he received a doctorate for his dissertation "A critical review of the development of the main Russian sources related to the history of Little Russia". In 1871, he left the university; at this time in material terms his situation improved significantly; He moved to Moscow and devoted himself to scientific studies.

October 15, 1866 he was elected a member of the Society of History and Antiquities , May 6, 1873 - a member of the Archaeographic Commission , March 17, 1880 - a member of the Russian Historical Society . In the studies of these learned societies and institutions, he took a lively and active part. He edited several editions; in the Archaeographic Commission, he constantly took part in the analysis and evaluation of various ancient documents, in the Society of History and Antiquities for 12 years he was the treasurer .

After the death of G.F. Karpov on April 24, 1890, his widow, AT Kappova, nee Morozova, contributed 11,500 rubles to the Society of History and Antiquities so that annually interest from this money would be given out as a bonus for scholars in Russian history, and the priority was given to the works devoted to the history of Little Russia .

Scientific activity

One of the closest students of S. M. Solovyov, G. F. Karpov, turned his attention mainly to the study of the process of education and the structure of the Russian state; he consistently studied the most decisive crises that Moscow Russia experienced in working on the state union of the Russian people. The richness and freshness of the data on ancient Russian life, extracted by S. M. Solovyov from his archival works, attracted the attention of G. F. Karpov mainly to the study of archival material. The first scholarly work of G. F. Karpov, “Essays from the History of the Russian Church Hierarchy ” (published in 1864), is devoted to the study of church-moral forces that supported the desire to unite in the Russian people. In a master's thesis (published in 1864), the author examined the unifying activities of Grand Duke Ivan Vasilyevich III and gave an assessment of many sources for the history of that time.

Subsequently, G.F. Karpov turned to the question of the reunification of Little Russia and Great Russia ; but the state of the sources necessary for this work, and in particular the errors of some previous studies on the same issue, required so many preliminary critical studies that G. F. Karpov devoted a whole doctoral dissertation to “A critical review of the development of the main Russian sources dating back to the history of Little Russia during January 8, 1651 - May 30, 1672. " Here he singled out the initial, factual basis in the stories of Bohdan Khmelnytsky , from later additions and fables; often he had to not only refute fictions, but also indicate how and even why in other scholarly works these fictions were supported. Many of the conclusions and remarks of G.F. Karpov caused reproaches against him in too biased, "Moscow" terms.
