Shirt
To wear cufflinks, you need a shirt with a “French” (double) cuff or with special cuts for cufflinks (combined). In the first embodiment, the cuff provides exclusively for cufflinks.
History
Cufflinks appeared in Europe at the beginning of the XVII century . Initially, the sleeves were tied with laces or ribbons. During the reign of the French king Louis XIV , the use of a pair of identical glass buttons interconnected by a short chain came into fashion.
By 1715, this simple jewel is replaced by a more refined one, decorated with precious stones (usually diamonds ) with a gold chain.
Cufflinks were expensive to manufacture at the time and were not widely distributed. The invention of the process of electroplating allowed to cover cufflinks, made of cheap metal , with a thin film of precious metal. But finally cufflinks became available for most only with the invention of American George Kremenets. Observations made on the production of cartridges for rifles , when the sleeve was formed from a single sheet of metal, helped him to shift this experience to the production of cufflinks. Having received a patent , in 1882 he created a machine that allowed for very cheap production of cuff links and significantly reduced production costs.
In 1924 a new fastener mechanism was invented. The “Boyer” company began to use the pin, freely rotating along the entire length inside the leg [1] . This system has become so popular that it is used to this day in most cufflinks.
Types of cufflinks
By symmetry:
- asymmetrical (front side - jewelry, reverse - clasp);
- symmetrical (both halves are the same).
By hitch mechanisms:
- rotating pin,
- chains,
- clasps
- rigid hitch.
According to the concept of execution:
- classic (strict shapes and colors)
- thematic (reflect the profession or hobby of the wearer)
- unusual (in the form of a skull or female figure)
- male (large, usually strict, dim colors)
- female (usually bright, can be decorated with crystals)
- functional (in the form of operating objects - hours, compasses , thermometers , etc.)
