“ Devibhagavata-purana ” ( Sanskrit ī भागवतपुराण , Devī Bhāgavatapurāṇa IAST ) or “ Devi-bhagavatam ” is the sacred text of Hinduism in Sanskrit . Along with the Devi Mahatmya and Kalika Purana , it is the most important text of the Hindu tradition of Shaktism . [1] Although the “Devi-Bhagavata-Purana” is generally classified as Upa-Purana (“minor Puranas ”), she herself calls herself one of the “ Maha-Puranas ” (“Great Puranas”). [2]
The Devi-Bhagavata-Purana is not accepted as a sacred text by all Hindus, but has this status only among the followers of Shaktism. In this Purana, Devi is described as the supreme goddess, the personification of Brahman and the basis of the entire universe. As a divine mother, Devi manifests his virat-rupa (universal form) (book 7, chapter 33), describes the proper way of worshiping himself, explains the various methods of yoga and meditation (book 7, chapter 35), and the ritual (book 7, chapter 39 ) The Devi Bhagavata Purana also discusses topics such as spiritual knowledge, social and personal ethics, and holy places of pilgrimage.
The Devi-Bhagavata-Purana consists of 12 skandas (books), 318 adhyayay (chapters) and 18,000 verses. The text itself claims that its author was the Vedic sage Vyasa , [3] who is also considered the compiler of the four Vedas , the other Puranas and the Mahabharata .
Since 2003, the translator Andrei Ignatiev has been translating the Devibhagavata Puranas from Sanskrit into Russian .
