History
The history of Needle begins with the discovery of gold deposits in the Boise River basin in 1862 . In the second half of 1863, a native of Illinois, Truman Catlin, bought 160 acres of land on Eagle Island on the Boise River. At first, Ketlin named the island in honor of his native state, but later renamed it in honor of the bald eagles ( English bald eagle ), many of whom lived on the island. In 1864, Kathleen, together with his neighbor Polit Mace ( English Polete Mace ) began to build an irrigation system . The system they built made it possible to supply 700 acres of island water to the Boise River. By 1903, the system consisted of 9 channels. Further development of the Eagle is due to a surveyor from Nova Scotia, Thomas Aikens ( born Thomas Hugh Aikens ). Around 1877, he received the right to use the water of the Boise River, including the right to Eagle Island. In the early 1890s, Aikens began acquiring land on the right bank of the Boise River, opposite his possessions on Eagle Island. As a result, he became the sole owner of the land, south of the current State Street ( English State Street ), which at that time was the main highway between Boise and small towns in the west. With the acquisition of these lands, Aikens began the construction of a bridge over the Boise River, which would connect his possessions. Representatives of the city of Star opposed the construction of the bridge, arguing that the undeveloped city does not need its own bridge. However, the dispute was decided in favor of Aikens. In 1900, the first school was built in Eagle. In 1904, the first 15 acres of the new Township Eagle were marked and sold, the name of which was proposed by the daughter of Aikens Clara. On August 7, 1907, a tram was launched on Boise Valley Loop. By 1915, a tram network connected Eagle with other nearby cities. The tram network led to the rapid development of the city: the first bank , pharmacy and hotel were opened. Bank and hotel today are the center of downtown Igla. In 1928, the tram network was closed, unable to withstand competition with cars . In 1930, a prison for 40 people was opened, continuously expanding over the next decade. In 1937, a hatchery was opened next to the prison, which is still operating. In 1963, a public library was opened, today containing more than 80,000 books. [1] On February 26, 1971, Eagle officially received city status. [2]
