Already in childhood, Louis received the title of chief administrator of the royal court and governor of Dauphine . He hoped to marry one of the daughters of King Henry IV or the daughter and heiress of the Duke of Montpensier , but Cardinal Richelieu picked up parties that were more advantageous for both of them. The Count de Soissons harbored a grudge against him and, joining forces with the Duchess of Chevreuse and her lover Chalet , tried to prevent the marriage of the Duchess de Montpensier with Gaston of Orleans .

Subsequently, the Count de Soissons not only reconciled with this marriage, but also became close friends with Gaston of Orleans, although he himself kept a vow of celibacy. On the " Day of the Fooled, " he showed loyalty to Richelieu, for which he received Champagne in management. Together with Gaston and Count Montresor, he continued to intrigue against Richelieu, apparently hoping to put his friend on the French throne. The frustrated cardinal ordered the guard to be assigned to him.

In 1641, Count de Soissons, with the support of the Spaniards, fled from Paris to the Sedan Principality and gathered an army of opposition-minded nobles. The army of Marshal Chatillon sent against him was defeated at La Marfe , but immediately after the battle the news of the death of Count Soissons spread. Intoxicated by victory, Soissons pranced on a horse with a gun in his hand on the battlefield won. When he stopped, he asked for water and, in order to bring the jug to his mouth, began to raise his visor with the barrel of his pistol, which shot - and the count flew to the ground with a shot head. Despite the fact that the accident was obvious, rumors began to spread about the arrow sent by Richelieu. The exact circumstances of his death are still controversial.

Although Louis had the illegitimate son of Louis-Henri de Bourbon-Soissons , his vast possessions (counties of Soissons , Clermont , Dreux ) were inherited by the children of his sister, the Princess of Carignana . Despite doubts about paternity, Louis's son was later approached by his niece, Maria Nemursky , who made him the heir to her possessions in Switzerland . Already an elderly bastard married the daughter of Marshal of Luxembourg and left offspring.
