Castle history
The castle was built of stone in 1095 - 1125 by Baron Guy from the genus Balliol ( English Guy I de Balliol ). Between 1125 and 1185, his nephew Bernard de Balliol and his son Bernard II expanded the building.
In 1216 the castle was besieged by Alexander II . The castle was still held by the Balliols, although their rights were disputed by the Bishop of Durham. When John I was deposed from the Scottish royal throne in 1296 , the castle was transferred to the Bishop of Durham. In about 1300, the English king Edward I handed over the castle to Count Warwick . In 1477, during the War of Scarlet and White Rose , Richard, Duke of Gloucester (later Richard III ) captured the castle, which became one of his favorite residences. In the 15th century, as a result of Richard III’s marriage to Anna Neville, the castle was transferred to her family.
Over the next two centuries, the Neville family expanded the castle. However, when Charles Neville, the 6th Earl of Westmoreland was deprived of rights for his leading role in the uprising and the castle was confiscated. In 1626, Barnard Castle (as well as the Reby Castle ) was transferred to Henry Wayne ( born Sir Henry Vane ).
Vane decided to make Raby his main residence, and Barnard Castle remained abandoned. Part of his laying was removed and was used to complete the construction of Raby.
Current State
Today the castle is at the disposal of the English Heritage Fund and is open to the public. Of particular interest are the ruins of the XII century cylindrical tower, as well as a large hall and a large chamber of the XIV century .
