Usage
- Classical Latin used Ā to record a long sound [ a ː ] in the words Rōmānī “Romans”, māximus “maximum”.
- The Latvian language uses the letter to record a long sound [aː], for example in the words gadā “in the year”, sastāvā “in the composition”, māja “house”, etc.
- The Maori language uses the letter to record both a long sound [aː] in the word Māori “Maori” and the English diphthong / ei / in borrowings such as Powerāde ( Poweraid drink, from the English - “strong help”).
- In pinyin, this letter means a high, even tone of the sound “a”.
- In romaji, the letter is used to record a long sound [aː].
