Anglo-Swedish War

The Anglo-Swedish War is a formal state of war between Great Britain and Sweden in 1810-1812.

During the Napoleonic Wars, Sweden was an ally of Great Britain, fighting against France. However, after losing the Russian war , Sweden was forced to make peace with Napoleon in the 1809 Friedrichsham Peace . The world was signed in Paris in 1810. Sweden had to join the continental blockade and declare a trade embargo on England. Since the UK was Sweden's largest trading partner, in reality, trade continued through smuggling.

On November 13, 1810, France put forward an ultimatum to Sweden, demanding that it within five days

  • declared war on Great Britain
  • confiscated all British ships in Swedish ports,
  • confiscated all British goods in Sweden.

Failure to comply with these conditions would lead to the war of Sweden against France and its allies, therefore, on November 17, the Swedish government adopted an ultimatum and declared war on Great Britain.

Nevertheless, during this “war” no military operations were fought; moreover, English ships continued to use the parking lot on the Swedish island of Hanyo in the Baltic Sea.

When Jean Baptiste Bernadotte became the Swedish crown prince, relations between Sweden and France began to deteriorate, and when in 1812 France occupied Swedish Pomerania and the island of Rugen , Sweden began to look for a way to make peace with Great Britain. After lengthy negotiations, a peace treaty was signed on July 18, 1812 in Orebro , together with a treaty that ended the war between Great Britain and Russia .
