Biography
After King Ine abdicated the Wessex throne in 726 and left for Rome without leaving an heir, a struggle for power began between Wales and Ethelard, brother-in-law Ine, and Oswald, a descendant of Kevlin . With the support of ельthelbald of Mercia , елthelard defeated Oswald and began to rule alone since 730 . However, he turned out to be dependent on Mercia . In 733, the Mercian king ельthelbald captured a significant part of the territory of Wessex, including the royal estate in Somerton .
Notes
- ↑ The tradition is reflected in, and may stem from, a charter in Glastonbury, now considered spurious, in which he is identified as the queen's brother. However, even as a forgery, it has sometimes been valued as at least "some evidence, when not contradicted by anything better", to quote Edward A. Freeman (1872), " King Ine ", Proceedings of the Somersetshire Archaeological and Natural History Society 18 , pt 2, 1–59, fn p. fifteen
