After Feanor was sent into exile for 12 years, he left with his son and grandchildren and settled with them in the fortress of Formenos . When Melkor, together with Ungoliant attacked Valinor and destroyed the trees, Finwe was the only one who was not afraid of the darkness and came up against Melkor with arms. Melkor killed him on the doorstep of Feanor's house and stole the Silmarils and other jewelry. Thus, Finwe was the first of the elves of Aman to receive a violent death at the hands of Melkor .
The death of his father greatly influenced Feanor. In part, she, as well as the abduction of the Silmarils, became the cause of the terrible oath and the outcome of the Noldor.
