History

South Andros, near Tiamo

The Spaniards landed on Andros in 1550 in search of slaves , while destroying the indigenous people of the Lucayans as a result of violence and disease. The Spaniards called the island “Espiritu Santo” ( Spanish: Espiritu Santo ), that is, the island of the Holy Spirit, but on the map of 1782 it is also called the island of San Andreas. It is believed that its modern name was given to him in honor of Sir Edmund Andros, commander of Her Majesty's troops in Barbados in 1672, and later the Governor of New York , Massachusetts and New England. It is also believed that the island could be named after the inhabitants of the island of San Andrés ( Spanish San Andrés ) on the Mosquito Coast ( English Mosquito Coast ), since 1400 of them settled on Andros in 1787.

In the 1700s, the island was occupied by pirates . At the end of the 18th century, loyalists also settled on the island.
