Biography

Rauf Hajiyev was born on May 15, 1922 in Baku .

At the age of 18, he wrote his first work - the operetta “Student Tricks”.

From 1948 to 1949 he studied at the Moscow Conservatory with a professor in instrumentation, N. P. Rakov , in 1953 he graduated from the Azerbaijan Conservatory in composition (graduate of Kara Karaev ) [1] .

In 1955 he organized the State Pop Orchestra of Azerbaijan, was its artistic director until 1964 [2] .

In 1964 he became director of the Baku Philharmonic , and a year later he took the post of Minister of Culture of the Azerbaijan SSR, having worked in this position until 1971 .

At the initiative of the Soviet leadership, Hajiyev, as general adviser on art on the African continent, was sent to Algeria , where he worked for 8 years. He participated in the creation in Algeria of academies of music, dance and theater [3] . He took part in staging a program of three one-act ballets to his own music, which was shown on a tour in Paris .

Upon returning to his homeland, he became chairman of the Union of Composers of the Azerbaijan SSR , and held this position until his death. Member of the Union of Cinematographers of the Azerbaijan SSR [4]

Member of the CPSU since 1958 [1] .

He died on September 18, 1995 . He was buried in the Alley of Honor in Baku .
