The musical is interesting in that all the actors playing on the stage are set “on wheels” - roller skates . This is one of the longest-running musicals in West End history that has survived the 7461 performance, the Broadway version has not gained such popularity, lasting only 761 performance. This is one of the most popular musicals in Germany, where, with the same popularity, it continues to this day.

Creation History

The composer was very interested in the idea of creating a musical about trains. He decided to use Cinderella Story as the basis: Rusty was implied by Cinderella, Grizboll and Electra by Evil Sisters, and the Star Express by Good Fairy.

The director Trevor Nunn had a difficult task - to create a show unlike the musical “ Cats ”. A difficult job was to be done for the artist-decorator John Napier. For the production, the Apollo Victoria Theater was completely rebuilt: a rollerdrome and special multi-tiered racetracks running right through the hall were built on the stage. The casting was very difficult, because the actor had to not only sing, but also be good at dancing and roller-skating.

The premiere took place on March 27, 1984. In addition to the actors, professional rollers participated in the show.

Story

Act I

Control - a little boy (voice behind the scenes), plays racing with his toy trains. In the midst of the game, his mother enters his room and puts him to bed. When Control falls asleep, Overture sounds under his silent murmur (he continues to give commands to trains in a dream).

“Trains” appear in the gloom, music reaches its climax and abruptly breaks off.

Diesel locomotive Grizboll (the current champion of races) and his gang of diesel thugs praise themselves that, they say, they are the fastest and fastest train ("Rolling Stock"). Grizboll states that no one can resist him in the race:

“You will see my butt, and that’s all you’ll see.”

Rusty appears - a steam locomotive (standing somewhere on the siding), on the contrary, considering himself the most invincible. Grizboll and his gang taunt him and leave. Rusty is immersed in the dream of participating in the championship (Call Me Rusty). With these dreams, he draws the attention of the Lotta Locomotion. He is considered weak and incapable of racing.

Upset Rusty leaves. "Girls" represent themselves ("Lotta Locomotion"):

Ashley is a smoking car, dreams of “quitting her habit,” but all her attempts fail.

Buffy - a buffet car, offers everyone "hot, cheap and quick-cooked" snacks.

Dayna - a dining car, always ready for service.

Pearl is a first-class carriage, a “brand girl”, a sweetheart of Rusty, his racing partner, but disappointed in his abilities.

Grizboll returns with wagons of the second and third class. With the roster, he praises himself again (Pumping Iron). But Rusty brings his friends to the stage - the Rockies train (freight train), which consists of three cars: Flat Top, Dustin and Sea. Bi. ("Freight").

To participate in the races, trains arrive: from France (Bobo), Italy (Espresso), Germany (Welschaft), Russia (Turnov), Japan (Hashimoto) and Great Britain (Prince of Wales). They are preparing for the first race, but the late one suddenly bursts in. A bright flash of light and Electra appears - an electric locomotive with its composition:

Krupp - weapons car

Rench - Electra repair car,

Pars - a money wagon,

Volta - Electra cooling system car,

Joule - carriage with explosives.

Electra strives to make the same impression as Grizboll. Introducing himself, he hints that he can "drive" with both alternating and direct current ("AC / DC").

Almost all couples have already teamed up for the first race. Electra invites Pearl to become her racing partner. Hesitating in the choice between an electric locomotive and a steam locomotive, Pearl "disconnects" from Rusty and selects Electra ("He'll Whistle At Me").

In the first race, Grizboll fraudulently overtakes Hashimoto and Espresso. Dyna (his partner) is not happy with his act and reproaches him. Angry, he knocks her over onto the rails and leaves her alone, despite a supplication and an apology. Si. Bi. seeing that Dyna was left all alone, sings her a ballad (“There's Me”).

Under the fanfare appears Papa-steam engine - father of Rusty ("Poppa's Blues"). When his son appears, dumbfounded by the departure of Pearl, Dad asks him what he is going to do next. He replies that he will participate in races either with Pearl, or will not participate at all. Convincing Rusty that not everything was lost, the old steam locomotive introduces him to his Bell racing partner, a sleeping car, and invites him to check in with her. Bell talks about his unbridled life ("Belle, the Sleeping Car"). Rusty invites her to become his partner and she agrees.

In the second race, Rusti loses to Electra (he “drove” with Pearl) and Weltshaft with Joule. Completely crushed, he returns to the scrap metal dump. Dad, encouraging him, talks about the Star Express - the God of trains, who will help him win, and asks Rusty to believe in Him. But he doesn’t even want to hear anything about it. He finally lost faith in himself. To prove to him the existence of the Star Express, Dad himself decides to participate in races. Only one problem arises - in the third race there are no more places. Suddenly and obviously, thanks to divine will, one place is freed up: the British train breaks. Treating this as the will of the Star Express, Dad takes Dustin into his partners and wins the race. The victory came at a great price - the race almost kills the old engine, it barely falls apart and therefore can not participate in the final. He asks his son to take his place. Not knowing what to do, Grow praying for help with the Star Express (Starlight Express).

Act II

All trains and trains are arguing about replacing Dad ("The Rap"). After all, Rusty has already lost one race and was disqualified, but on the other hand, Dad has the right to choose who he wants to replace. In the end, it was decided that Rusty would participate in the race.

Grizzball, leaving Dyna, takes Pearl away from Electra and invites her to become her partner. The abandoned and upset Dyna sings about her loneliness (“UNCOUPLED”). She remembers that she was ridiculed by many trains, but Grizboll’s betrayal is the most painful for her and swears that she will never forgive the locomotive.

Bell, Buffy, and Ashley encourage her and punish her so that she will be more active, agile and aggressive. Without thinking twice, Electra invites Dyne to her partners, she agrees, suggesting that this will be the reason for Grizboll's jealousy.

Si. Bi. Meets with Elektra and reveals to him his ugly and vile nature ("CB"). It turns out that he is the culprit of all the largest accidents in history. He promises to make Electra win the final. Everyone believes that the main struggle will be between Elektra and Grizboll. Si. Bi. meanwhile, convinces Rusty to abandon the race. Pearl, learning about this, is going to inform the judges, but Grizboll threatens her, promising that she will certainly be disqualified if she does. Frightened, Pearl abandons his idea. Si. Bi. continues to taunt Rusty, convincing him that he has no chance of winning.

The steam engine pities itself again. The Rockies roster tells him that no matter how talented you are, if you are never lucky, you will never win (“Right Place, Right Time”). Having finally become discouraged, Rusty prays the Star Express for help, and this time He answers him ("Starlight Sequence"). The Star Express says it will help him win, and that Grow is the Star Express. After all, he has such a great faith. Grow is happy about it. The music suddenly subsides, and Rusty hears a cough. This is Dustin. The steam engine asks Dustin to become his partner in the last race, and he willingly agrees.

Dayna tired of the race. She expected more from the electric locomotive, but he did not live up to her expectations, so she "disconnects" with him ("He Whistled at Me" (reprise)). Especially not worried about this, Electra invites C to replace her. Bi.

The time has come for the finale. Participating in it: Grizboll with Pearl, Electra with C. Bi. and Grow with Dustin. Elektra and Grizboll do not focus on the race; instead, they fight among themselves for the attention of others. Rusty gains an advantage, but loses it again when Grizboll, considering that Pearl is only a burden for him, disconnects with her right during the race, and Rusty stops to help her. But Grizboll is losing a partner. And according to the rules of the race, each participant must have a partner. The only chance not to fly out of the race for the diesel locomotive is to try to take the C away. Bi. at Electra. They begin to fight for him, and this allows Rusty to take the initiative again.

He strides forward and wins the race, becoming the absolute champion, and receives the title of “The fastest car in the world.” At this time, the diesel locomotive and electric locomotive continue the struggle for Si. Bi, fly into the tunnel and crash. Having suffered a crushing defeat and having lost his pride, Elektra (during the race he loses his posh mohawk) is trying to get rid of C. Bi. and Grizboll and laments about the injustice of fate ("No Comeback"). Under the weight of shame, he disappears.

Grizboll and C Bi, or rather, what remains of them - sent for repair ("One Rock 'n' Roll Too Many") under a friendly laughter (everyone laughs except Rusty, Pearl, Dad and Dustin).

The steam dad ordered Grizboll to show the place where he had "unhooked" Pearl - Rusty was obliged to help her, otherwise he was not worthy to bear the title of champion.

Lone Pearl sings the ballad "Only He." She finally realized that she always loved only Rusty, that she should be with him and take care of him, but it might be too late to correct all the mistakes ... Fortunately, Rusty finds her and forgives her everything. Together they sing "Only You."

Everyone else joins them. Buffy and Ashley reflect on how wonderful it is to meet your love on the railroad. Grizboll apologizes to Dinah and she, following Rusty's example, forgives him.

Dad tells the diesel locomotive that he is not obliged to obey the Control and must live on his head, without anyone's direction. The outraged Control orders the trains to obey him and do what he says. But they ask him to shut up and not point them out.

Steam Dad and Bell lead the incendiary song “Light At The End of the Tunnel,” which praises steam energy. The show ends with a race through the hall, a greeting from the audience and an orchestral reprise of “Light At The End of the Tunnel”.

В ноябре 1992 года в Лондонской постановке произошли большие изменения: мюзиклу дали новое название — «New Starlight Express» («Новый Звёздный Экспресс»), были добавлены пять песен («Crazy», «He'll Whistle at Me», «Make Up My Heart», «Next Time You Fall in Love», «The Megamix»), 12 песен («The Overture», «Engine of Love», «Call me Rusty», «Hitching and Switching», «There's Me», «Belle The Sleeping Car», «Heat Three», «Wide Smile», «High Style», «No Comeback», «Only He», «Only You») и два персонажа (Си.

Энергичная и быстрая «He Whistled at Me» была заменена вялой балладой «Make Up My Heart» ещё до 1992 года.

«One Rock 'n' Roll Too Many» вместе с Гризболлом исполнял Электра.

«He Whistled at Me» была заменена более уравновешенной балладой «Make Up My Heart».

Гризболл, Камбуз и Электра вместе исполняют «One Rock 'n' Roll Too Many». Перл сначала исполняла «Make Up My Heart», однако этот номер сократили ещё в период предварительных показов. «Only He» был заменена «Only You». Шоу заканчивалось «Light at the end of the Tunnel».

Вместо «Call Me Rusty», Расти и состав «Lotta Locomotion» исполняли песню «Liebesexpress» (Бродвейская «Engine of Love»). «Ne Lok mit Locomotion» («A Lotta Locomotion») «Hilf Mir Verstehn» («Make Up My Heart») — Бродвейская версия, в которой Перл, в конечном счёте выбирает Электру.

В то же время «Allein im Licht der Sterne» («Next time you fall in love») заменила «Du Allein» («Only You»).

В 2008 году «Overture» была заменена «The Entry of the National Trains» (перемещённой от «AC/DC»). Композиция «Engine of Love» была полностью удалена и заменена сокращённой версией «Call Me Rusty». Её мелодия, была переработана для баллады Пёрл «He'll Whistle at Me», с новым немецким переводом. Также была удалена «There's Me». Для «Starlight Express» была взята версия, начинающаяся со слов: «When your goodnights have been said». «The Rap» в настоящее время исполняется в версии «It's Race Time».
