Biography
After the death of his father in 1348, he inherited Pembroke and Hastings, while still a baby.
John Hastings took an active part in the Hundred Years War . In 1369, as part of an army led by Edmund Langley , Earl of Cambridge , he went to France , landing in Saint-Malo . From there, he, along with John Montague , Earl of Salisbury , he went with a three thousandth detachment to raid Perigord . During this raid, after a nine-week siege, he was able to capture the well-fortified fortresses of Burdei and Roche-sur-Ion . He later participated in the capture of the Belle-Perche castle, during which Isabella Valois , widow of Pierre I , Duke de Bourbon , was captured. In the same year, the king knighted John Hastings to the Order of the Garter .
In 1370, John Hastings joined Cognac in an army led by Edward the Black Prince . September 19, John participated in the capture of Limoges .
In 1371, John Hastings was appointed petitioning judge to parliament.
In 1372, John Hastings was appointed commander of the British forces in Aquitaine . On June 22, with the help of the fleet, he tried to lift the siege from La Rochelle , but was defeated at the naval battle of La Rochelle by the combined French-Castilian fleet. As a result, he was captured and was sent to Castile , where he stayed for 3 years.
In 1375, John Hastings was released from captivity for a promise to pay a large ransom, but died on the way home. He was succeeded by a young son, John, who was born at a time when he was in captivity.
Marriage and children
1st wife: from May 19, 1359 ( Ridding Abbey , Berkshire , England) Margarita (July 20, 1346 - c. 1361), daughter of King Edward III of England . There were no children from this marriage.
2nd wife: from July 1368, Anna (July 24, 1355 - December 30, 1389), daughter of Sir Walter Manny. Children:
- John (November 11, 1372 - December 30, 1389), 3rd Earl of Pembroke, 5th Baron Hastings and 2nd Baron Abergavenny from 1375, 3rd Baron Manny from 1384
