In his youth he was fond of hockey, but since 1955 he finally focused on boxing. Combining sport with the work of a bus driver in Decin, he managed to break into the Czechoslovak Olympic welterweight team (up to 63.5 kg).
The 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome was the first major international start for an athlete. Unexpectedly for everyone, he made it to the finals, on the way to which the Soviet boxer Vladimir Yengibaryan left the tournament at the 1/4 final stage. In a duel for gold, he defeated the representative of Ghana, Clemente Quarti, and became the third-ever Czechoslovak boxer to excel at the Olympics.
At the European Championships in Moscow in 1963 he won a bronze medal, and at the continental championship in Rome in 1967 he became the champion in the second welterweight (up to 67 kg).

After graduating from a sports career in 1968, he became a coach in Usti nad Labem and worked until his retirement.
